The roof covering you can see from the street tells a story about when a building was constructed and the local material traditions of the time. Victorian properties in Reading and its inner suburbs were typically covered in Welsh slate, often with decorative clay ridge tiles. The post-war expansion into Bracknell, Crowthorne, and Sandhurst brought concrete interlocking tiles and artificial slate to the mass-housing estates of the sixties, seventies, and eighties. Berkshire's older villages and the commuter belt around Windsor and Ascot still feature clay plain tile on many period properties, sometimes with leadwork valleys and dormer details that require real craft to maintain.

We install natural Welsh slate, fibre cement slate, concrete interlocking and plain tiles, and clay plain tiles — and we maintain and repair all of them too. Getting the specification right matters: pitch, gauge, lap, underlay specification, and fixing method all need to suit the covering and the exposure of the site.
For listed buildings and conservation areas we are experienced in working with requirements around matching materials and maintaining character — we will point out early if an intended material is likely to attract planning comment.

We can source matching reclaimed or new Welsh slate in most cases. Where a perfect match is not available we will show you the options before any work starts.
Natural Welsh slate is a quarried stone product with a distinctive texture and very long life expectancy. Fibre cement slate is manufactured and more uniform in appearance; it costs less. We can advise on which is appropriate for your property.
Good-condition tiles are often worth salvaging, and reclaimed clay and slate can be more attractive than new. We will assess the existing covering on site and advise on what percentage is re-usable.
