Roof Cleaning
Moss and algae removal, soft washing, and biocide treatment for pitched and flat roofs — Legacy Roofing covers Berkshire and London.
Moss, lichen, and algae growth is an almost universal feature of pitched roofs in the south of England. The damp climate, the shade cast by mature trees, and the texture of concrete tiles all encourage biological growth. Left unchecked, moss holds moisture against the surface of tiles and slates, accelerating freeze-thaw erosion and, on concrete tiles, contributing to tile degradation over time.
Legacy Roofing carries out roof cleaning across Berkshire and London using a combination of manual moss scraping and soft washing — a low-pressure biocide wash that kills off residual spores without the tile-lifting risk that comes from high-pressure cleaning. High-pressure washing can dislodge ridge mortar, displace roof tiles, and force water into the roof space; we do not offer it.
After cleaning and treatment we inspect the roof surface for any tiles that have been exposed as loose or cracked during the process — catching those early saves a repair call later.
For properties where moss regrowth is a persistent issue — particularly those with north-facing or heavily shaded pitches — we can also apply a longer-duration algaecide treatment.

Roof Cleaning — Common Questions
Our soft-wash approach does not. High-pressure washing can lift tiles and mortar — we use low-pressure biocide cleaning specifically to avoid this.
Treatment duration varies with the exposure and shade of the roof. Most treatments remain effective for several years before regrowth becomes significant.
Moss growth alone does not indicate a roof needs replacing. After cleaning we assess the condition of the tiles and give you an honest view of the roof's remaining life.
