The ridge is the most exposed course on any pitched roof. It sits at the apex, facing wind from every direction and the full force of driven rain, and the mortar bed that holds ridge tiles in place is often the first element of a pitched roof to deteriorate. Loose or blown ridge tiles are one of the most common causes of roof-related emergency calls — a tile that lifts in high winds can slide down and damage other tiles below it, or in the worst case fall into a garden or onto a public footpath.

The traditional approach — re-bedding in mortar — remains appropriate for many applications, but mortar-bedded ridges require the mortar to be raked out fully and replaced in one go rather than topped over. Pointing over existing mortar leaves the failed bed beneath and simply delays a future failure.

For properties where the ridge has been a recurring maintenance issue, or for new roofs, dry-ridge systems offer a more durable alternative. Dry-ridge mechanically fixes ridge tiles without mortar, eliminating the erosion-and-cracking cycle entirely. They also allow air movement at the ridge, which can improve roof space ventilation.
